Domain Privacy Protection - Do I need it?

January 28th, 2010

domain-privacy-protectionEvery domain name has a publicly accessible record that includes the owner’s personal information. It’s called a WhoIs record and lists the registrant and contacts for the domain. By default it will be listed on the WhoIs record for your domain:

Your name, address, city, state, zip, country, phone number, email address!

It also shows when you registered your domain, when it will expire, where your website is hosted, and other technical details. You can view the record for your domain by going to domaintools.com and putting your domain in the box labeled “WhoIs Lookup” then clicking the “Search” button. These records are available anytime to anyone who does a search.

Why is the WhoIs record public info?

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) requires domain registrars to make your contact information available. It is used for some legitimate purposes such as verifying ownership of a domain name in a transfer request. Law enforcement agencies may use it when investigating illegal activity on the internet. Companies or individuals may also use these records to contact domain holders who are violating copyrights or other property rights.

So, what’s exactly could be danger for you?

Your domain record may also be used in ways that aren’t legitimate or desirable. Since anyone can look up a WhoIs record, spammers, hackers, identity thieves and stalkers may access your personal information! Unethical companies check domain expiration dates then send official looking “renewal” notices in an attempt to get the domain owners to transfer domains to their company, or send “invoices” that are service solicitations for search engine submissions and other questionable services. Both email and snail mail spammers use the WhoIs databases to contact domain owners with solicitations as well.

What can you do to protect your privacy?

Many domain registrars now offer a service called privacy protection. When you choose privacy protection, your personal information will not be listed on the WhoIs record. Instead, the information of the registrar’s privacy service will appear. You still own your domain.

What are the benefits of domain privacy protection?

Once you’ve activated privacy protection on your domain and your personal information is no longer public, spammers can’t use it to find your email address or send you those deceptive domain renewal notices from other companies.

    What are Cronjobs

    October 9th, 2009

What are cronjobs? This article is about main knowledgebase - suitable for beginners.

Cron is a time-based job scheduler in Unix-like computer operating systems. ‘cron’ is short for Chronograph.

Cron enables users to schedule jobs (commands or shell scripts) to run automatically at a certain time or date. It is commonly used to perform system maintenance or administration. Although this is general purpose also it can be used for other purposes, such as connecting to the Internet and downloading email.

Cron has been recreated several times in its history.

Cron is driven by a crontab, a configuration file that specifies shell commands to run periodically on a given schedule.

Early versions of cron, available up through Version 7 Unix and 32V, made their services available only to the super-user of the operating system; this was the single-user version. With the release of Unix System V and the multi-user cron, these services were extended to all account-holding users of the system.

Basic Tips and Tricks to Choose Good Hosting

    October 6th, 2009

For newcomers to the world of web hosting, the vast amount of need-to-know information can be overwhelming. There are so many terms to know and understand. Here are a few defintions to increase your knowledge of web hosting and hosting technology.

Disk Space – The amount of hard drive space on the host server. This space is used to store all code, files, databases, images and videos for your site. You generally want to future-proof your site by getting a plan with larger amounts of disk space than you need.

Bandwidth – The amount of data that can be sent to or from the host’s server measured in bytes. This term is often used interchangeably with data transfer. Data, whether it be text, images, audio or video, is requested by visitors of your site and then transferred from the server your site is on. Many hosts have a limit in place for bandwidth, which is called ‘monthly data transfer’.

RAM – Random Access Memory, commonly known as RAM, is the amount of memory on the server that your site can use. If your site or service is very resource intensive, say a video site, you are going to want a large amount of RAM. A smaller site, say a personal blog, can get by on smaller amounts of RAM.

Now that you know these basic terms, you can order HOST-ED.NET FREE, Personal or Busyness Plan! It’s fast, easy and there is no obligation!

Basic tips for choosing domain names

    September 7th, 2009

You can get your domain name from host-ed.net - Click here and we will help you to find the best solution.

Basic tips for choosing domain name:

    1. Start brainstorming for relevant to your domain words.
    • List as many words as you can think of related to your preferred domain name.
    • List as many words as you can think of that are related to the content of your website.
    2. Make different combinations with the listed words that are:
    • short,
    • memorable,
    • not easily confused,
    • hard to misspell,
    • related to the core of the business,
    • with appropriate sounding to the core of your business.

Shorter domain names are easier to remember and type, and far less susceptible to mistakes: for example lottary.com is easier to remember, type than playthenationallottaryonline.com

But sometimes there is an exeption to this rule. A longer domain can be easier to remember by human memory than the shorter one - for example tbrea.com is a sequence of unrelated letters that is difficult to remember and type correctly, whereas, if we expand it to its long form ‘TheBestRealEstateAgency.com’ we are more likely to remember the domain name.

    3. Pick a few of these combinations that you most like for the name of your domain.
    • If you like a specific word to be included in the domain name, think of all its forms: noun, verb, adverb, adjective.
    • Consider also hyphens and numbers: sometimes you are a hyphen away from the dreamed domain name.Should you get a hyphenated name? There are a few things to consider here.

      Disadvantages:

      • It’s easy to forget the hyphens when typing a name. Many users are used to typing things like worldwildlifefund.com but not world-wild-life-fund.com.They’ll probably leave out the hyphens and wind up at your competitor’s site
      • When people recommend your site to their friends verbally, having hyphens in your domain name leads to more potential errors than when the name does not contain hyphens. For example, how do you think your visitors will refer to your site if it is named free-online-games.com. They might say, “I visited Free Online Games dot com yesterday. It was fabulous.” Their friends, remembering that comment later, might type into their browsers freeonlinegames.com.

      Advantages:

      • Search engines can distinguish your keywords better and thus return your site more prominently in search results for those keywords occurring in your domain name.
      • The non-hyphenated form may no longer be available. At least this way, you still get the domain name you want.
    4. Start searching for the availability of these domains.
    5. If you do business online, register your domain with as many of the extensions as available!
    • Point them all to your site
    • Let your name drive more traffic to your site.
    6. If your preferred choice is not available, do not discourage and try the next combination!

Helpful tips when registering your domain name:

    1. Try to register a domain which contains a popular keyword applicable for your industry. This will help your customers remember your domain name better.
    2. Don’t register a domain containing the digit “0″ in it, unless it is going to be part of a recognizable word (like 1000 or 2000). This is because the digit “0″ is often confused with the vowel “O”.
    3. Try to avoid using domains that contain “2″ for “to”, “4″ for “four”, “u” for “you”. Your customers will easily get confused. However, if you must register such a domain, register the expanded form of the domain as well, i.e. if you are registering only4you.com also you can register onlyforyou.com.
