Basic Tips and Tricks to Choose Good Hosting

October 6th, 2009

For newcomers to the world of web hosting, the vast amount of need-to-know information can be overwhelming. There are so many terms to know and understand. Here are a few defintions to increase your knowledge of web hosting and hosting technology.

Disk Space – The amount of hard drive space on the host server. This space is used to store all code, files, databases, images and videos for your site. You generally want to future-proof your site by getting a plan with larger amounts of disk space than you need.

Bandwidth – The amount of data that can be sent to or from the host’s server measured in bytes. This term is often used interchangeably with data transfer. Data, whether it be text, images, audio or video, is requested by visitors of your site and then transferred from the server your site is on. Many hosts have a limit in place for bandwidth, which is called ‘monthly data transfer’.

RAM – Random Access Memory, commonly known as RAM, is the amount of memory on the server that your site can use. If your site or service is very resource intensive, say a video site, you are going to want a large amount of RAM. A smaller site, say a personal blog, can get by on smaller amounts of RAM.

Now that you know these basic terms, you can order HOST-ED.NET FREE, Personal or Busyness Plan! It’s fast, easy and there is no obligation!

What features should I look for when choosing a web host?

September 20th, 2009

The more you know about what you need, the easier it will be to find the right web host for you. For starters, you should determine the following:

1. Do you want a shared or virtual private server?
Depending on what your requirements are, you may be better off with a virtual private server (VPS) than a shared server. Virtual private servers are typically used in cases where there is a high level of traffic, there is a strong need for security, or you wish to run your own customised software and applications rather than the standard ones supplied by the host. Host-ed.net offers VPS packages with root access and Linux operation system installed. Basically you can install all aplications you need and run every software you need, which may not be possible on the standart shared hosting platform.

If you do not have a big site that will be receiving a lot of traffic, then shared should be fine for you.

2. Are you a good match?
Is your host’s server, software and support services compatible with the skills and software that you (or your design team) are using? If, for instance, you are working in a Linux environment, then it makes little sense to choose an Linux host. We provide the VPS with root access and Linux, PHP, MySQL and etc. installed. Please note that if you need windows hosting we could provide you with a VPS, but you should be responsible for finding, installing and managing the software. In that case we can just provide the hardware and you do the rest.

3. Are You Flexible and Can I Upgrade?
It is much easier to upgrade your current hosting plan than to start looking for a new one. With our hosting plans, there will be some features that you need and some offered that you don’t need. Be sure to focus on the essentials that are required to launch your website. It’s a good idea to choose a host that will allow you to expand and upgrade your plan as and when your website grows. We have 3 options of VPS upgrades our Starter VPS, Pro VPS and Advanced VPS. We also have custom upgrades from which you can upgrade single options like disk space, traffic, RAM or CPU. You can also upgrade from a shared hosting to a VPS in the hosting control panel

What types of shared hosting are available?

September 13th, 2009

Although many different types of shared hosting are available, UNIX/Linux and Windows hosting dominate. Which type of hosting you choose depends on what technology your web site will utilize. Web sites that will utilize PHP programming and a MySQL database (as many Open Source Content Management Systems do) should use a UNIX/Linux based platform. Sites utilizing technologies like ColdFusion, IIS, VBSCript, Windows Media, .ASP or .NET programming, an MSSQL database, or a range of Microsoft solutions such as Frontpage, should use a Windows based platform (Windows 2003, Windows 2008). How many accounts are available to one server?

September 13th, 2009

The number of accounts on one physical server is entirely up to the web host, and as such, those considering shared hosting should examine very carefully which web host to use.
We at Host-ed.net know that customer satisfaction is more important that reaching the highest possible profit rates and we maintain 500-700 users per server, which in the shared hosting field is considered as low number of users hosted per server. Our servers are powerful enough to even support more than 1000 users per server, but we do not want to risk the performance and the quality of the service for a few more dollars. After all quality service and happy customers would bring us more value than a few overstuffed servers and dissatisfied customers

What are the disadvantages of shared hosting?

September 13th, 2009

Because in shared web hosting server resources are shared between a number of account holders, if traffic to a particular website spikes, it will utilize more of the resources available than the other websites. This means that the performance of your website is often at the mercy of other, better performing web sites on the same server. In addition, being shared, hacker activity, malware, viruses, and any disruptive activity (DOS attacks, etc.) directed at a particular web site could impact all the accounts on a server. That is why it is always recommended to keep a back up version of your site each time you make changes. Furthermore, because of users’ lack of control of server resources, they are wholly dependent on the support provided by a host. If support is under par, this can lead to tremendous frustration on behalf of the user. The quality of support is key to most people’s decision regarding which web host to use. Always look for 24/7/365 support department. Host-ed.net’s team is working 24 hours a day which is even available on international holidays like Christmas, New Year, Easter, etc and response time is 1-2 hours guaranteed. So if you have a personal or small business site you can easily host it with us on a shared hosting account without having to bare the disadvantages of the shared hosting, but only enjoying its advantages.

Seven Basic Steps To Upgrade UNIX Hosting

August 8th, 2009

Though often overshadowed by the market dominated Windows and Linux platform, Unix remains a widely used platform and a popular option for web hosting.  This article will introduce you to seven features commonly found in Unix hosting plans.  Though basic, these features are very important and should not be underestimated.

1.) POP3 Email Accounts – An example of a POP3 email account would be “mailto:yourname@yoursite.comyourname@yoursite.com“.  Most hosting companies will provide you with a large number of email accounts to use for yourself or distribute to your employees.

2.) Webmail and SMTP – As soon as your website goes live, email will likely become your main source of communication.  The tool you need to make this an easy process is a webmail program such as Horde or Squirrelmail.  This process can be even faster when downloading your messages to email clients such as Microsoft Outlook or Eudora.  However, in order for this to work, you need a Unix hosting solution that supports messaging protocols such as IMAP and SMTP.

3.) Spam Filter - It doesn’t matter who you are, no email user is immune to spam messages.  In this day and age of the internet, having a reliable spam filter is a must.  These applications are installed on the web server where your site resides and typically offer features such as blacklisting, whitelisting and greylisting to mitigate spam.  The more flexible filters will allow you to make configurations to tag spam and have it delivered straight to a quarantine folder to keep it from cluttering your inbox.

4.) FTP Accounts - FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a method that allows you to upload your files and maintain them on the server.  A Unix host that supports this protocol usually provides the ability to create a certain number of FTP sub-accounts.  This allows you to provide your clients and users with access to password-protected directories, which is very useful for sharing files in a more efficient and secure manner.

5.) Backup Utility - While most web hosts perform automated backups on a regular basis, you should never put the fate of your website in their hands.  There are many ways to backup your website data, but the easiest way is with a utility specifically designed for this task.  Most of today’s control panels come included with built-in utilities that allow you to easily backup your site in minutes.

6.) Web Stats – Analyzing your visitors and traffic can play a crucial role in the success of your site.  Popular web stat software such as AwStats and Webalizer run on the back-end of the server and can provide you with detailed reports on your statistics.  This can give you the knowledge to make the needed adjustments or additions that increase traffic and boost sales.

7.) PHP and MySQL – Similar to Linux, almost all Unix plans come with support for PHP server-side programming and the MySQL database server.  These features are generally provided for no extra costs and can give you the power to create a dynamic, data-driven website.

Generic Domain Helps You in SEO

June 17th, 2009

Although having a website is easier and more affordable than ever.  However, actually getting your content in front of potential customers is becoming progressively difficult.  This is mainly because so many businesses and industries are being established online.  Regardless of what you specialize in, competition in the market is sure to be heavy.  Unless you have a budget to put forth thousands of dollars on advertising and SEO web design, there is a possibility that your site will just sit collecting dust in cyberspace.  Fortunately, there are numerous strategies that can get you one step closer to the traffic you desire.  Believe it or not, your domain name plays one of the most significant roles in increasing search engine visibility and bringing in quality visitors.  While some tend to go for flash or unique terms, this article will explain why you may want to keep your domain name simple with generic keywords.

Why a Generic Domain?

When registering a domain name equipped with generic keywords, you stand the chance to rank higher and faster than some of the most well designed and optimized sites.  This is a very crucial aspect of SEO.  Although search engines literally return hundreds to thousands of results, you want to find yourself at the head of the class instead of the last few pages or even somewhere in the middle.  Let’s be honest - how many pages do you sift through when looking for products or services on Google?  Probably not many.  Most web surfers don’t make it past the first two pages.  This means your web pages needed to be listed somewhere in the top 20 in order to be viewed.   One of the best ways to achieve this ranking is with a good, generic domain name.

How it Works

The average search engine is more like an advanced variation of the Yellow Pages.  You can typically find the exact product or service you’re looking for in the phone book underneath a generic name.  On the web, search engines like Yahoo function in a similar manner, delivering search engine results based on sites with URLs and content relevant to what is being requested.  For example, if your business “Computer Company” sells laptop computers, you can dramatically increase search engine traffic by using the generic term “laptop” in your domain name rather than the name of your business.   This simple strategy could put you light years ahead of competitors who focused on the trendier names.

Some organizations pay thousands of dollars on advertising but the internet has evolved tremendously.  With this evolution have come a variety of new ways to attract the increasing number of potential buyers.  There is a lot that goes into site promotion and to be honest, nothing is ever guaranteed.  While investing in quality advertising can prove beneficial, site promotion all starts with choosing a good domain name.  Savvy webmasters and businesses have learned that when it comes to securing their presence and gaining a competitive edge, the generic domain name is one of the best ways to go.
