Now we will talk about Meta Tags in HTML pages and how important they are for SEO. But first as usually we will describe how Search Engines work. Search Engines use special crawlers, known also as bots. Their main target is to scan your HTML pages and collect information from them. Some parts of the html are treated(by SEO bots) with high priority than others. For example html set like <strong>important note</strong> is treated by bot as more important than other text that is not formatted. There is logic - for instance when you read some article you take more attention on bold parts. Bots are made with similar logic - formatting html and text is very important. We will talk more about formatting text in other article!
What are Meta Tags and why they are so important
Meta tags are specific html tags set at the begining of html page(short summary paragraphs) - they describe web page and its content! It is recommended for webmasters to set at least these 2 meta tags - Meta Description and Meta Keywords. There are also another meta tags that are use by bots - some of meta tags are used by only specific search engine crawlers. The reason why meta descriptions are so important in search engine optimization is because they greatly affect the ranking of a site or page or a particular keyword. Meta tags should describe each page in correct way - short description in meta tags(in description, keywords, etc) should be relevant to the content of the page. Some webmasters make mistake to use the same meta tags in each page! Remember: Use SHORT and RELEVANT unique description and keword phrasess in your Meta tags - and should describe in the best way the page content! So Meta tags are treated by SE bots as important parts of html. Search Engine crawlers use this part in their search algorithms - for instance if a meta tag contains a selection of keywords(which are alos relevant to the content of the page), then this page would likely rank highly for these keywords. Nowadays some webmasters and SEO specialists advise us that these tags are not so imported for SEO and we should not take so attention on them. This is not correct for us - when we make our SEO we take time and anylize every web page so we can create most propriate meta tags for every single page. Meta tags still are very important for SEO and analyze your pages and write your meta tags!
